“Knowing the journey, and where it leads—
I embrace it and I welcome every moment of it.”
Dr. Louise Banks, Arrival
February 2022
Pandemic. Covid-19. The Great Job Resignation. Omicron. These are just some of the
things that challenged us in 2021.
The challenges of 2022 are in the here-andnow. We experience them everyday. What
awaits in the future is still unknown. Like the
fictional Dr. Banks, we know this journey.
We embrace it. And like true voyagers,
we welcome it.
And we welcome you to join us in this journey
and to SF47—our first-ever, hybrid in-person
and virtual film festival.
Garen Daly
As we have for nearly five decades, Boston SciFi celebrates the creativity of science
fiction and international cinema. Given the challenges of these past few years, this
celebration resonates deeply, in a meaningful and powerful way—inspiring our team to
produce and host a combination live and virtual event this President’s Day holiday.
We think it’s pretty awesome.
Please explore it to the fullest. There are intriguing feature films, creative short films,
informative talks, and fun events, the beloved, traditional 24-hour Marathon and more.
You—our wonderful audience, our talented filmmakers—we hope will agree that this is
something special. And as we join together, one thing is certain, as our motto states:
The Future is Now.

Authors in Whose Honor We’ve Named the Short Film Programs
Isaac Asimov was most appropriately considered one of “The Big Three” science fiction authors as well as a
professor of biochemistry. He wrote or edited over 500 books in the realm of science fiction, fantasy and mystery
including his most well-known work, the Foundation series for which an adaptation is currently running on Apple
TV. This close friend of Gene Roddenberry was a claustrophile and credits his love of the written word as a result of
having an endless supply of newspapers and magazines in childhood from the candy stores his parents owned.
Ray Bradbury had a life altering chance encounter with a carnival magician named Electrico. While bathed in static
electricity, he touched young Bradbury one the nose and exclaimed “live forever!” This sparked Ray Bradbury to
write every day of his life. A luminary most known for Science Fiction, Ray Bradbury wrote across multiple genres
creating literary staples such as Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles. His earliest paid credit at tender age of
14 was writing a joke for George Burns which was used on The Burns and Allen Show.
Octavia Butler’s paralyzing shyness and mild dyslexia did not stop her from becoming an acclaimed author of
popular Science Fiction works such as Parable of the Sower, Kindred, and The Patternist novels. She held many odd
jobs including potato chip inspector which served to sprinkle her writing with interesting details.
Lady Margaret Lucas Cavendish (aka Dutchess of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, aka Mad Madge) was a seventeenth
century English philosopher, poet, Science Fiction writer and playwright known for such works as The Blazing World,
The Public Wooing, and Youths Glory, and Deaths Banquets. In a bold move for a time when women published
under anonymity, Lady Cavendish published under her own name. She also served as a lady-in-waiting for royalty.
C.J. Cherryh is an American writer of speculative fiction with 80 books to her credit including the notable
Downbelow Station and Cyteen. This figure skater who began writing at the age of 10 due to her frustration of Flash
Gordon being cancelled has the distinction of having an asteroid named after her.
Milton Davis is a contemporary writer of Black Speculative Fiction and owner of MVmedia, a small publishing
company specializing in Sci-fi, Fantasy and Sword and Soul genres. In 2008 he gathered his unfinished manuscripts
and embarked upon realizing his dream of becoming a published author. While maintaining his career as a chemist
he is currently thriving as a writer with 21 written works including Playing the Odds, Eda Blessed: A Ki Khanga
Adventure, and Eda Blessed II.
If you are familiar with Total Recall, Bladerunner, The Man in the High Castle, and Minority Report among many
others, you are familiar with the brilliant work of Philip K. Dick. This lauded science fiction author was gifted
an electric typewriter from another heavy hitting Sci-fi author, Robert Heinlein when he fell on hard times. This
fascinating and tortured individual accused members of the F.B.I. of being foreign spies.
Ursula K. Le Guin was a Speculative Fiction author with an abundance of novels short stories, poetry, children’s
books and more to her credit including the well known Earthsea Series, The Lathe of Heaven and The Eye of the
Heron. Of her multitude of awards and accolades, she refused one of her 6 Nebula awards in solidarity to a friend for
political intolerance. In 2022 the first Ursula K. Le Guin prize for fiction will be awarded to one very lucky recipient.
Robert Anson Heinlein certainly had a good foundation for becoming a Science Fiction writer. He was a naval
officer and an aeronautical engineer in his lifetime. Notable works of his include The Moon is a Harsh Mistress,
Stranger in a Strange Land and Starship Troopers, which was made into a feature film. He is said to be a pioneer of
“Hard Science Fiction” which emphasizes scientific accuracy and logics.
Anne McCaffrey was a Science Fiction and Romance writer whose acclaimed works include Dragonriders of Pern,
Restoree, and The Ship Who Sang. She was the first woman to win both the prestigious Hugo and Nebula awards
for her writing. Ironically when she served as secretary and treasurer of the Science Fiction Writers of America, one
of her duties was to handcraft Nebula trophies.

Classic Double Feature
Saturday, February 19, 2022
11:00 a.m. The Day the Earth Stood Still 1951 • United States • 1h 32m
“From out of space... a warning and an ultimatum!”
This was the first film screened at the first 24-hour Marathon in 1976 and has
the distinction of being the most-screened film over the years—seven times!—
beginning with SF1 and most recently at SF40 in 2015. Based on the short story
Farewell to the Master by Harry Bates. The film retains its classic status on the
strength of Edmund North’s script, Robert Wise’s direction (The Andromeda
Strain, Star Trek - The Motion Picture), and some very good acting. Also famous
for its wonderfully eerie score by composer Bernard Herrmann (see article, p.33), whose use of
Leon Theremin’s eponymous electronic instrument firmly establishes the mood. Troubled by Earth’s
development of atomic weaponry, a watch dog federation of planets dispatch Michael Rennie and
his robot, Gort, to Washington, DC to offer Earth’s governments a choice: cease aggression or face
total annihilation. Rennie attempts to understand humans by taking a room incognito at a boarding
house where he meets Patricia Neal. It is Neal who utters the immortal phrase, “Gort! Klaatu barada
nikto.” Also stars Hugh Marlowe, Billy Gray, and Sam Jaffee.
12:45 p.m. Jason & the Argonauts 1963 • United Kingdom • 1h 44m
“The epic story that was destined to stand as a colossus of adventure!”
Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion special effects—and our nod to Bernard
Herrmann’s score (see bio, p.33)—are the real stars in this Greek mythological
adventure. Jason, the son of the King of Thessaly, sails on the Argo to the land
of Colchis, where the storied Golden Fleece is guarded by a seven-headed
hydra. The best moments are the flying harpies, bronze Talos, and Harryhausen’s
best known and finest work—the armored, sword-wielding skeletons. Many of
Harryhausen’s films have played the 24-hour Marathon over the years. In 2020 (SF45), Boston SciFi
honored Harryhausen’s work with a screening of Mysterious Island (also scored by Herrmann) with his
daughter Vanessa Harryhausen in attendance representing The Haryhausen Foundation. Directed by
Don Chaffey. Good acting here as well. Stars Todd Armstrong, Nancy Kovack, and Gary Raymond.

Classic Double Feature
How many double features have you seen without a single violin?
Bernard Herrmann (1911-1975) is one of film music’s first and most important
innovators. Of the same tradition as Hollywood’s Golden Age romantic-influenced
composers, he served as a cross-over figure by developing modern approaches
that remain staples of film music today. With a career that starts in 1941 with
Citizen Kane and ends in 1976 with Taxi Driver, he composed for some of
Hollywood’s greatest and most critically acclaimed films.
Bernard Herrmann • Public Domain
Herrmann’s teeth-cutting experience came in New York at CBS Radio, where he
began his historic collaboration with Orson Welles’ Mercury Theater. Working on
radio productions such as The War of the Worlds, he gained a fresh perspective
he would bring to Hollywood when he went with Welles and his collection of
wunderkind to work on Kane. This included his cellular-style of writing (now
ubiquitous in film music), and an understanding that the recording, broadcast or
film was the finished work. So there was no need to confine his orchestration to
a standard orchestra as if writing for the concert hall. He could write for whatever
instruments the story and other factors (including practical ones, like budget)
demanded. Both of today’s films provide wonderful examples of these approaches.
The score to director Robert Wise’s The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), Hollywood’s first socially conscious scifi film, is written for the eerie, electronic theremin, 4 pianos, 4 harps, 16 brass, marimba, organ and no strings,
woodwinds or (non-pitched) percussion, creating a strange, unique soundscape for this story of other-worldly
contact. The music’s minimalist writing makes for a clear example of another of Herrmann’s innovations learned
from radio—”cellular” writing. Short ideas of a few bars are repeated, altered and passed among sections of the
orchestra. This leads to music that can be interesting without distracting, and is easily modified live on the scoring
stage, a skill for which Herrmann was well known.
Pay attention to the very ending of the film—a wonderful moment because of the clarity with which the music
backs up the final reveal by joining the two main musical themes (the mysterious “Klaatu” and bittersweet, patriotic
“Arlington”), alternating ‘cells’ from each.
During his illustrious career Herrmann wrote majestic scores for some of Hitchcock’s most acclaimed films,
including Vertigo, North by Northwest and Psycho, as well as Francois Truffaut’s Fahrenheit 451 and The Bride
Wore Black, Cape Fear (both versions), Brian De Palma’s Sisters and Obsession, and his only Academy Winning
winner, the now obscure 1941 The Devil and Daniel Webster. He was also a prolific television composer, writing for
sci-fi classics The Twilight Zone (including the lesser known original season 1 theme) and Lost in Space, as well as
Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Have Gun, Will Travel, and Gunsmoke.
Much of this television work took place around the same time as the last of his four collaborations with stopmotion savant Ray Harryhausen. Jason and the Argonauts is an epic tale from mythology that gave Herrmann the
chance to bring to bear all of his storytelling skills. He doesn’t disappoint! He created a heroic fantasy score in the
tradition of Max Steiner’s King Kong, using intense music to help sell phantasmic special effects and extra-human
experiences, and Wagnerian leitmotifs (musical ideas that represent various characters and themes) to tell the story.
This is another uniquely Herrmannian-instrumentation—huge brass, woodwind and percussion sections (including
10 timpani), but again no strings! (How many double features have you seen without a single violin? Contrast
today’s soundtracks with Herrmann’s strings-only score to Psycho.) Note all the imaginative textures Herrmann
builds with this pallet—expressing emotions heroic to mysterious, warlike to serene—and the use of harp/lyre to
reference the gods—spoiler alert!—even when secretly embedded among humankind!

In 2020, only five percent of all Hollywood composers working on movies were female. By this
measure, true equality and diversity in the composing field are quite behind. This panel will
celebrate several female composers—learn about their careers, the films they have worked on, their
process, what it is like to be a female composer, and how to improve diversity in the field.

The 24 Hour Marathon
We’ve been at this for 47 years, making us
a 24-hour, cornucopian motion picture
meant 750 of us—old friends and new—
theatre, straining eyeballs and tushies, to
and soon-to-be classic to the occasional dash
smaller this year, but we’re back with a great
the oldest genre film festival in America—
endurance test. In the pre-Covid days, this
gathering together in a vintage movie
watch a full day of cinema, from the classic
of B-movie schlock. Our numbers may be
line-up. February 20-21 noon to noon.
Vaccinated, boosted, and masked, come early to the Somerville Theatre for the pre-show. Then, the
‘Thon launches at 12 noon, as always, with a fireball, a robust cheer, and the Warner Brothers’ classic
1953 cartoon Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century. This year’s lineup includes 12 feature films and
other fun—planned and impromptu, including games, trivia, and more.
12:00 p.m. Star Trek:
First Contact 1996 • United States • 1h 51m • Rated PG-13 • 35mm
The Borg—an interstellar collective of cybernetic organisms—travel back in
time from the 24th century to prevent the space-faring Earth pioneer, Zefram
Cochrane, from testing his faster-than-light warp drive, the invention that led
to humanity’s 21st century “first contact” with extra-terrestrials—the Vulcans.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the U.S.S. Enterprise pursue the Borg to preserve
the timeline and thwart the “assimilation” of Earth’s people. Directed by Jonathan
Frakes. Stars Frakes, Patrick Stewart, James Cromwell, and the Next Gen cast.
02:10 p.m. Outbreak 1995 • United States • 2h 7m • Rated R • 35mm
An illegally smuggled African monkey harboring a lethal virus is let loose
outside a suburban California town. The US government and military seek to
find the monkey and contain the deadly virus before it becomes a global threat.
Oops—in a filmmaking goof, there are no naturally occurring Capuchin monkeys
in Africa. But who’s to quibble when the fate of the world is at stake. Based on
Richard Preston’s The Hot Zone and Laurie Garrett’s The Coming Plague. Directed
by Wolfgang Petersen. Stars Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, Morgan Freeman,
Kevin Spacey, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Patrick Dempsey, and Donald Sutherland.
04:25 p.m. The Day the Earth Caught Fire 1961 • United Kingdom • 1h 39m • Not Rated
The joint detonation of American and Soviet nuclear weapons at the North
and South Poles spins the Earth off its axis in this newsroom, documentarystyle, British sci-fi film. As the planet is hurled toward the sun, ensuring mass
destruction, the government struggles to find a quick solution to save mankind.
Which headline will prevail—”World Saved” or “World Doomed”? Directed by
Val Guest (Quatermass films, When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth). Stars Edward
Judd (First Men in the Moon), Janet Munro (The Crawling Eye), and Leo McKern.
Screened at SF5 (1980 at the Orson Welles Cinema).

The 24 Hour Marathon
(continued from page 36)
06:30 p.m. The Invisible Women 1940 • United States • 1h 12m • Not Rated
Now you see her, now you wish you still could. Based on an original story by
Curt Siodmak and Joe May (The Invisible Man Returns), a female model—with
an ulterior motive—volunteers for an experiment to make her invisible in this
1940 sci-fi comedy. Thieves steal the invisibility device, but they can’t get it
to work, so they kidnap its zany inventor and the woman, who turns out to be
a formidable foe. Directed by A. Edward Sutherland (a frequent collaborator
with W.C. Fields). Stars John Barrymore, Virginia Bruce, John Howard, Charles
Ruggles, Oskar Homolka, Margaret Hamilton, and Shemp Howard.
07:45 p.m. Cosmos 2019 • United Kingdom • 2h 8m • Not Rated
When three amateur astronomers intercept a radio signal of unknown origin
from space, one of them sends a signal back. Knowing a response is logically
thousands of years away, they are astounded when a reply comes back only
hours later. Shaken but determined, the events set them on a scientific quest to
prove the existence of life on other planets. Cosmos apparently had no budget—
all the equipment was either owned or borrowed, all the locations were lent, and
the cast and crew worked for free. Directed by Elliot Weaver and Zander Weaver.
Stars Tom England, Joshua Ford, and Arjun Singh Panam.
10:05 p.m. Interstellar 2014 • United States • 2h 49m • Rated PG-13 • 70mm
The straightforward plot description is this: when a crop crisis begins to render
the Earth uninhabitable, a team of astronauts is tasked with journeying through
a wormhole to locate a suitable planet to inhabit. It’s a race through time to find
a new home before Earth’s life sustaining resources are exhausted. The dive into
special relativity and quantum theory is somewhat more complex—and a big
part of the challenging fun. Directed by Christopher Nolan (Tenet, Inception).
Stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, John Lithgow,
Timothée Chalamet, David Oyelowo, and Michael Caine. Music by Hans Zimmer.
01:05 a.m. I, Robot 2004 • United States / Germany • 1h 55m • Rated PG-13 • 35mm
That a robot shall not harm a human seems to go in one robot ear and out the
other in this action-packed mystery thriller loosely based on the writings of scifi luminary Isaac Asimov. In a futuristic society, personable robots handle life’s
mundane tasks, but Sonny has a less than sunny disposition—fomenting a robot
revolution with dire consequences for human beings. A technophobic cop and
a sympathetic robotics expert must get to the bottom of Sonny’s “positronic”
malfunction to ensure mankind’s freedom. Directed by Alex Proyas. Stars Will
Smith, Bridget Moynahan, Bruce Greenwood, and Alan Tudyk (Sonny’s voice).

The 24 Hour Marathon
(continued from page 37)
03:05 a.m. The Omega Man 1971 • United States • 1h 38m • Rated PG • 35mm
Thanks to an experimental vaccine, Dr. Robert Neville may be the only healthy
survivor of a catastrophic biological war in this riveting, man vs. mutants, postapocalyptic tale. Sensitive to light and psychotic in their behavior, the roving,
nocturnal mutants blame science for their plight—and they want the doctor dead.
He must use his wits, will, and skill to survive the hostile world that envelops him.
Loosely based on the 1954 novel I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. Directed
by Boris Sagal. Stars Charlton Heston, Anthony Zerbe, Rosalind Cash, Paul Koslo,
and Eric Laneuville. Screened at SF27 (2002 at the Coolidge Corner Theatre).
05:00 a.m. Laserblast 1978 • United States • 1h 22m • Rated PG
A blend of Carrie and Close Encounters. Billy Duncan is a lonely and unhappy
teenager. He’s bullied and ignored—but his life changes dramatically when
he finds an accidentally abandoned alien laser cannon in the desert. Seeking
revenge on those who mistreated him, Billy’s newfound power transforms his
very being. Will the aliens racing back to Earth to retrieve the cannon they left
behind arrive in time...? In 1996, Laserblast clawed its way onto Mystery Science
Theater 3000. Directed by Michael Rae (Aliens Gone Wild). Stars Kim Milford,
Cheryl Smith, Gianni Russo, Ron Masak, Keenan Wynn, and Roddy McDowall.
06:30 a.m. The Man Who Saved The World 1982 • Turkey • 1h 38m • Not Rated
This science fiction fantasy, martial arts, superhero, adventure—its Turkish title
Dunyayi Kurtaran Adam—was negatively reviewed when it premiered in 1982,
but has gained a cult following over the years. Although known as the “Turkish
Star Wars” because of its unabashed larceny of Star Wars footage, the plot is
largely unrelated. Two space cadets crash land on a desert planet. Initially, they
speculate that only women inhabit the planet and their “woof whistle” proves
to be a bad idea. An evil wizard soon shows up and medieval mayhem ensues.
Directed by Çetin Inanç. Stars Cüneyt Arkin, Aytekin Akkaya, and Füsun Uçar.
08:10 a.m. Superman II 1980 • United States • 2h 2m • Rated PG • Director’s Cut

the man of steel, Superman picks a heck of a time to give up his powers for the
sake of love in this second installment of the wide screen Superman franchise.
With powers to rival Superman and help from Lex Luthor, the alien outlaws pose
an extreme threat to truth, justice, and the American way. Directed by Richard
Lester and Richard Donner (un-credited). Stars Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder,
Gene Hackman, Ned Beatty, Terence Stamp, Sarah Douglas, Jack O’Halloran,
Jackie Cooper, Susannah York, and Valerie Perrine.

Love conquers all, but can it conquer giant, murderous, cold-blooded, mutated
reptiles and amphibians? When a misguided chemical attempt to avert an
asteroid strike goes horribly wrong, turning normal, cold-blooded animals into
mutated monsters, Earth’s population takes shelter in underground bunkers.
Seven years later, things have not improved, but Joel, reconnecting with his
high school girlfriend Aimee by radio, is desperate to reunite. Against all logic,
he embarks on a monster-laden trek to find her. Directed by Michael Matthews.
Stars Dylan O’Brien, Jessica Henwick, and Michael Rooker.

Located at 55 Davis Square in Somerville, Mass., the Somerville Theatre
is an independent movie theater and concert venue.
A Little History
The Somerville Theatre, part of the Hobbs Building in the heart of Davis Square, was designed by the firm of
Funk & Wilcox of Boston and built in 1914 by Joseph Hobbs. Designed for stage shows, vaudeville, opera,
and that new fad—motion pictures—the theatre was only one of several Hobbs Building attractions, which
also included a basement café, bowling alley and billiards hall, ten ground floor storefronts, and the Hobbs
Crystal Ballroom on the second floor. The second and third floors also contained leased office space.
The theatre opened its doors for the first time on May 11, 1914. The opening program featured a music and
dance act—The Stewart Sisters, a comedy playlet by the Fuller-Rose company called “A King For A Day,” a
singing skit by the Adairs, and “The Inventor’s Wife” — a two-reel film presentation.
Today, more than ten decades later, the main theatre venue features Dolby Digital Sound, twenty-four
surround speakers throughout the original auditorium, and a revamped projection booth that includes two
Norelco DP-70 projectors enabling the Somerville to be one of the few movie theatres in New England that
can screen 70mm film.
The Somerville also is home to live theater and hosts numerous film festivals including this one—the Boston
Science Fiction Film Festival, the longest-running genre film festival in the United States.
Among the notable names to have appeared on stage at the Somerville are Hunter S. Thompson,
Maya Angelou, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Cheap Trick, Donovan, Phish, Norah Jones, U2, Bruce Springsteen,
Adele, Nelly Furtado, Leonard Nimoy, Kevin Kline, Ben Kingsley, Billy Bragg, The Black Crowes, Guster,
Tracey Chapman, and countless others.
In 2018 the two cinemas in the basement level were completely rebuilt and upgraded, with all new seats,
audio, and projection improvements.
In March 2020 along with virtually every other theater, the Somerville Theatre closed due to the Covid-19
pandemic. When what was initially believed to be a short closure was clearly extended for over a year, the
Fraiman family decided to use the closure as an opportunity to complete further renovations; in a major
project, the Crystal Ballroom on the second floor was rebuilt and opened in October 2021, while the theater
lobbies and sales areas were completely updated and refreshed. Now with the classic main theater and two
modern screening rooms remaining, and in fine form, the theater reopened in September 2021.
The Somerville Theatre continues doing what it set out to do since 1914 – provide the community with
quality entertainment on stage and screen. It distinguishes itself from the large theater chains by offering
lower prices; great popcorn and Richardson’s Ice Cream; a fine beer and wine assortment; a superior
presentation with well-maintained projection equipment and a staff of union projectionists who take pride
in their work; and a staff and management with local roots taking pride in its mission, and a passion for the
remarkable place that is the Somerville Theatre. Excerpt • Copyright © 2022 Somerville Theatre

February 2021
Welcome to SF46,
A lot has been said about this past year. It is much like Dickens’ oft repeated quote: “It was the
worst of times. It was the best of times.”
It was the worst of times because so many have died, many due to the shallow avarice of
demagogues. It was the worst of times because that which we love has been taken away from
us. We have lost family and friends. We have lost jobs and careers. We can no longer see each
other, embrace each other, exchange ideas in person, and feel the palpable emotion of a film
festival. All of this is hard to comprehend.
Yet, it is the best of times because some of those
remarkable of human traits have sparkled through
this darkness. In particular, the crew of SF46 has
been diligent, creative and generous. They have
worked long hours, brought their very best to the
table and created a virtual festival where there
had been none. They have given you and me,
something to enjoy during the darkest winter in
memory. I am humbled by their gift.
Photo by Harry O. Lohr, Jr.
Yet SF46 is more than an amazing group of people working hard together. It is also about you,
the people who are participating with us. While we have endeavored to pull this off, you have
been steadfastly there to support us and to encourage us. Without your support, we would be
like the proverbial tree in the forest. No one would hear us. Your support is an immeasurable
piece of humanity. I believe it is part of why science fiction is so powerful. Sci-fi presents the
best of what being a human being is all about. You, the faithful, embody that.
Before I close, we also need to recognize the artists who have persevered in quarantine and
other obstacles. Filmmakers are continuing to share their visions and stories in the most trying
of conditions. We are lucky. What they have given us is perhaps the best festival we have ever
produced. Please spend some time in our SciFi Café and meet with them.
So thank you filmmakers. Thank you friends and supporters. And thank you to the SF46 Team.
This is your festival and I am in awe of you all.

connect with other festival attendees, and see everything the festival has to offer--all in one place. We recommend
accessing the app via your Internet connected computer < https://app.socio.events/ODExMA%3D%3D/overview > for
streaming films and attending Meet & Greets at the SciFi Cafe. We recommend downloading the app to your mobile
device from the Apple App Store or Google Play to keep the schedule, program, chats with attendees, and other
features at your fingertips. Be sure to refresh often!
Festhome is our streaming platform for festival feature films, shorts, and panels. You will create your Festhome login
when you buy your ticket. Remember your email and password. You will need them to access the programs you’ve
purchased once they are released for streaming.
Swank Motion Pictures is our streaming platform for the 24-hour Marathon. You can access the Swank Motion Pictures
platform by clicking on “The Marathon” in the Socio menu, which will open a pane with a link to the Marathon/Swank
Motion Pictures platform. Click on the link. (note: the link may not activate until the program is ready for streaming).
Enter the email you used with Festhome and the Marathon password, which will be released to passholders.
streaming
We recommend connecting your computer to your television with an HDMI cable, or by using Apple Airplay or
equivalent if you have a Smart TV or home theater setup.
Log into SocioTM via your desktop computer < https://app.socio.events/ODExMA%3D%3D/overview > or via the mobile
app. For festival features and short film programs, select “Movies” in the Socio menu. To access a film or shorts program
for which you’ve purchased a ticket, click on your selection, then click the Festhome link to watch your selection.
Festhome will ask for you a username (which is your email) and a password, which Boston SciFi will send to your email
address prior to the screening. The 24-hour Marathon functions the same way. Log into Socio via your desktop computer
or via the mobile app and select “The Marathon” in the Socio menu. Click the link to go to the Swank Motion Pictures
platform. Similarly, for panels, select “Panels and Workshops”.
The 24-hour marathon
Our virtual Marathon is a continuous 24 hour streaming event, featuring classic sci-fi films. The Marathon starts on
February 14th at noon and continues through the night, ending 24 hours later. Access to The Marathon is included with a
Festival Pass. If you do not have a Festival Pass, you can buy a ticket to the 24-hour Marathon on our website. Screenings
of Marathon films are not sold individually. The Marathon will be streamed through Swank Motion Pictures, which ticket
holders can access through our Socio web-based interface and mobile app. When you buy your Marathon (or Festival)
Pass, the email you use will be registered with Swank Motion Pictures. Log into SocioTM via your desktop computer or
via the mobile app (see above) and click on “The Marathon” in the Socio menu. Enter your email and the Marathon

12:00 p.m. The Thing (1982) Rated R
In an effort to hew closer to John W. Campbell’s original story of a shape-shifting
alien, director John Carpenter and screenwriter Bill Lancaster looked beyond
Howard Hawks’ 1951 version. An American scientific expedition to Antarctica
discovers the wrecked remnants and shredded human remains of a nearby
Norwegian base. Who can be trusted? With heaps of groundbreaking makeup
effects by Rob Bottin and a musical score by Ennio Morricone. Starring
A. Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, Richard Dysart,
Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, and Kurt Russell. Last screened at SF8 & SF35.
02:00 p.m. The Quatermass Xperiment (,aka The Creeping Unknown, 1955) Not Rated
Considered by many to be the best of the British Professor Quatermass series,
an astronaut transforms into a slithering mass upon his return to Earth.
Writer-actor Nigel Kneale’s BBC teleplay made it’s way to the big screen as one
of Hammer Film’s first forays into sci-fi. Kneale hated the idea of using American
actor Brian Donlevy so much, he tried to supress the sequel (Quatermass II).
Paul McCartney’s Beatles-era girlfriend Jane Asher plays the little girl who
innocently befriends the monster. Directed by Val Guest. Also starring Jack
Warner, Margia Dean, and Thora Hird. Last screened at SF6.
03:30 p.m. 12 Monkeys (1995) Rated R
Director Terry Gilliam’s (Brazil, Time Bandits) grungy view of the near future
is eerily topical. A prisioner is sent back in time to the year 1990 to discover
the source of a deadly plague that killed billions and forced society to move
underground. Inspired by Chris Marker’s French photo montage short film
La Jette (1962) and co-authored by David Peoples who also wrote Blade Runner.
Starring Bruce Wllis, David Morse, a scruffy Brad Pitt, Madeleine Stowe, and the
late Christopher Plummer who died on February 5, 2021 at age 91 in Westin,
Connecicut. 12 Monkeys last screened at SF31.

06:00 p.m. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
Across the 8th Dimension (1984) Rated PG
Returning to the Boston Science Fiction Film Festival after 15 years, this
amusingly whacky tale pits neurosurgeon–fusion rocket car physicist–rock star–
government troubleshooter Buckaroo Banzai and his band, the Hong Kong
Cavaliers, against squabbling Lectoids from the 8th dimension. Written by Earl
Mac Rauch and directed by W.D. Richter. Starring Ellen Barkin, Jeff Goldblum,
John Lithgow, Christopher Lloyd, and Peter Weller in the title role. Buckaroo Last
screened at SF13, SF18 & SF31.
08:00 p.m. Tenet (2020) Rated PG-13
SF Marathon Premiere. Shot on 70mm and 35mm film, director-writer
Christopher Nolan’s action-sci-fi thriller is another in his string of tricky, complex
narratives with big production values. Recruited by a mysterious organization
called “Tenet,” an unnamed CIA operative, known as “The Protagonist,”
journeys through a twilight world of international espionage. Tenet was notable
as being the only major feature to brave a wide release in theaters during
the COVID-19 pandemic. Starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson,
Elizabeth Debicki and Juhan Ulfsaki.
10:45 p.m. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) Rated R
Mel Gibson—in his youthful iteration—roared into screendom’s pantheon of
fictional heroes as a cynical Robin Hood in a post-nuke world. George Miller’s
crisp direction and Gibson’s fatalistic performance made this the surprise hit of
1981. Essentially a brutal Western about an isolated oil outpost under siege by
Mohawked bikers. Known throughout most of the world as Mad Max 2, the film
was retitled in the US because 1979’s Mad Max had done little business in the
States outside of drive-ins, grindhouses, and SF6 where it was a hit! Also stars
Bruce Spence, Michael Preston. Last screened at SF14.
12:30 a.m. Slither (2006) Rated R
This science fiction comdy-thriller aims to blend its B-movie camp with equal
doses of Tremors-like comedy and Dawn of the Dead gore. Written by writerdirector James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), Slither proved to be a lively
addition to the undead genre. When a meteor from deep space falls to Earth
with the egg of an alien, parasitic worm, a small town is overtaken by a horrifying
plague, turning residents into zombies and mutant monsters. Starring Pittsfield,
Massachusetts native Elizabeth Banks, Nathan Fillion (Serenity), Don Thompson,
Gregg Henry, and Michael Rooker (Guardians Of The Galaxy).

02:15 a.m. Species (1995) Rated R
In this Alien-ish outing, Natasha Henstridge plays a DNA experiment gone bad.
She’s a murderous human-alien (watch out for those nasty tentacles) hell-bent
on reproducing. A group of government scientists and mercenaries are hell bent
on stopping her. The film has remained popular due to its sexy monster premise
(Species spawned three sequels). Alien conceptual artist H.R. Giger was on
board to help create the visual for Sil, the creature. Also starring
Ben Kingsley, Forest Whitaker, Michael Madsen and Alfred Molina. Directed by
Roger Donaldson (Dante’s Peak).
04:15 a.m. Attack The Block (2011) Rated R
From the producer who brought us Shaun Of The Dead, this adrenaline-filled
gory-story of aliens in pursuit of kids from the South London ‘hood is the
inventive debut feature of director-writer-comedian Joe Cornish. In this tale,
Cornish, who also wrote the script for 2011’s The Adventures Of Tin Tin, keeps
a brisk bloody pace with a succession of clever plot twists to match. Many of
the teenage actors were found through their schools and online open auditions.
Starring John Boyega (Pacific Rim, Star Wars - The Last Jedi), Jodie Whittaker,
Axel Esmail, and Nick Frost (Shaun Of The Dead) as Ron.
06:00 a.m. TRON (1982) Rated PG
TRON was one of the first movies to use computer-generated images. A
hacker (a charismatic Jeff Bridges) is zapped into a powerful computer where
he becomes a pawn in the Master Control Program’s fight-to-the-death videogame. Only TRON, the system security program, can stop the cruel and
dictatorial MCP. Written and directed by Steven Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird.
Also starring Bruce Boxleitner, David Warner and Barnard Hughes. Near the
end of the movie, if you look along the ground where the “umbrella vehicle” is
traveling, you may catch a glimpse of Mickey Mouse’s silhouetted head.
07:45 a.m. Flight Of The Navigator (1986) Rated PG
SF Marathon Premiere. This kids friendly film from Blue Lagoon and Grease
director Randal Kleiser became a cult favorite on VHS and cable TV. On July 4,
1978, 12 year-old David Freeman disappears, returning eight years later, still
12 years-old and unaware he’s been missing. It’s probably no coincidence that
NASA has found a flying saucer entangled in power lines. The film was released
by Disney as the original production company, PSO, was on the verge of going
out of business. The fanbase has grown to the point that a feature reboot is in
the works. Starring Joey Cramer, Paul Reubens, and Cliff De Young.

10:00 a.m. The Thing From Another World (1951) Not Rated
The original Thing makes a welcome return to the Marathon. Directed by
Christian Nyby, this old-fashioned, well-acted tale exudes the style and panache
of its producer Howard Hawks. A group of scientists, journalists, and soldiers
are sent to Antarctica to investigate a mysterious spacecraft and the thing
within it. The screenplay by Charles Lederer is notable for its wit, with such
memorable lines as “an intellectual carrot, the mind boggles” and “watch the
skies.” Starring Robert Cornthwaite (1953’s War Of The Worlds), Dewey Martin,
Margaret Sheridan, Douglas Spencer, Kenneth Tobey (The Beast From 20,000
Fathoms), and James Arness (Gunsmoke) as the Thing.
